Antique Victorian Bookcases began life very similar to earlier Georgian and Regency models in design but soon came into its own. It still had a Glazed upper section above cupboard doors but new features such as rounded corners, rounded more simple pediments were fitted and they always had to be highly french polished. The later Victorian cabinet maker liked to add astragal glazing bars, some simple carvings to the door fronts and also favoured more open bookcases , for ease of access to the reading material. The very late Victorian bookcases, were more heavily carved, often with a secretaire drawer fitted and plain glass doors. Oak, Walnut and Mahogany was the timbers used in construction along with fine inlay such as string inlay and banded edges. The best examples are the earliest models, more simple in design, still in the original finish, and traditionally cleaned to a high standard like we do here on Antiques World. Tall Victorian Walnut Antique Glazed Bookcase Dating from the Victorian period, circa 1900, this very impressive  antique glazed bookcase  / display cabinet is constructed from walnut and has relatively tall proportions. The moulded cornice displays dental moulding and a decorative frieze with lovely blind fretwork carvings. Below this can be found two astragal glazed full length doors with brass clash mould and key with working lock. The interior contains three adjustable shelves and benefits from the glazed sides making it an ideal grand display cabinet. The piece has a moulded lower edge, stands on four cabriole legs and still retains its original back boards.

Golden Oak Antique Victorian Glazed Bookcase on Cupboard This striking antique glazed bookcase on cupboard is made from a beautiful golden oak and dates from the Victorian period, circa 1900. It has a moulded cornice above two glazed doors which have a key with working lock. The interior of the bookcase contains a total of three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a rectangular moulded top over two mahogany lined drawers with attractive original Arts & Crafts style brass handles.

Quality Antique Victorian, Attractively Proportioned, Glazed Bookcase Dating from around 1860 in the Victorian period this antique mahogany glazed bookcase on cupboard is of a grand design but has very practical proportions. The stepped moulded cornice sits above two glazed doors with arched mouldings and key with working lock. The interior contains three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a rectangular top above two cupboard doors with beautifully figured central panels while the interior contains a single removable shelf. Both upper and lower sets of doors are framed with beautifully carved corbels while the whole piece stands on a plain plinth

Superb Quality Victorian Mahogany Antique Glazed Bookcase This super example of a Victorian antique glazed bookcase on cupboard  dates from around 1870 and is made from mahogany. It has a moulded cornice above two glazed doors with arched moulded edges. The doors retain their key with working lock and once open reveal an interior containing three adjustable shelves. The lower section has a beautifully figured plum pudding mahogany top with half round moulded edge above a moulded frieze drawer and two cupboard doors. The doors have arched mouldings, consistent in style with those at the top, and again retain their key and working lock.

Antique Victorian Characterful Oak Glazed Bookcase / Cupboard Dating from around 1860 in the Victorian period this relatively large glazed bookcase / cupboard is constructed from oak and is full of character. It has a rectangular top above two cupboard doors with arched mouldings and the original glass panels. The interior of the cupboard has two adjustable shelves while the doors are flanked by flat raised pilasters.

The lower section of the antique bookcase has a rectangular moulded top above two cupboard doors with key and working lock and distinctive reeded panels.

 The slim design of this early Victorian antique oak bookcase is quite rare, it dates from around 1840. It has a rectangular top with a moulded lower edge above two glazed doors with arched moulding. The half round clash mould is accompanied by a key and working lock. The doors are flanked by stylish pilasters. It is the ideal bookcase to place in a room where space is at a premium, its desirable slim proportions making it a very practical piece.

Victorian Mahogany Antique Glazed Bookcase. Dating from around 1870 in the Victorian period the doors have wonderful golden flamed mahogany panels, moulded edges and are flanked by delightfully carved corbels.  The original appearance of the mahogany has been retained and revived resulting in a wonderful glass like finish with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.

Grand Arts & Crafts Oak Glazed Antique Bookcase, Dating from around 1880 in the Victorian period this large oak antique bookcase is a lovely example from the Arts & Crafts movement. It has a moulded cornice, with shaped Arts & Crafts style brackets, above two glazed doors having the original bevelled glass, original handles along with lovely acorn and oak leaf designed carvings.

Quality Victorian Walnut Antique Open Bookcase with Decorative Carved Edge. Dating from around 1890 this fine quality Victorian Walnut Antique Open bookcase has a beautifully figured top sitting above a decoratively carved edge, that would have been carefully hand carved by a skilled craftsman of the Victorian period. It has three adjustable shelves and sits on a moulded plinth.

Dating from ca. 1890 this Tall Victorian Solid Oak Antique Open Bookcase has a figured rectangular top with canted edges, sitting above three adjustable shelves and stands on a plain plinth, still retaining the original back boards. The quality of timber used and workmanship, with the simple styling makes this a perfect example of an Arts & Crafts piece of antique furniture.

Stunning Quality Victorian Golden Oak Antique Bookcase. Dating from around 1890 in the Victorian period this antique, stunning quality, bookcase is a beautiful golden shade of oak. It has a moulded cornice above two glazed doors with an interior that contains three adjustable shelves. The base has a delightfully figured, rectangular moulded top above two drawers with moulded fronts over two cupboard doors with raised fielded, beautifully figured, panels. The interior of the cupboard has a single fixed shelf while all the doors and drawers have the original brass handles. The base is finished with a shaped apron and the sides are finished with moulded edges.
